DTRA Lesson Plan
- Do a preview of the pictures of the story and ask the students’ what they think is going to happen based on the picture.
Opening Questions:
Tutor: The title of this story is “A List” what do you think Frog and Toad are going to do in this story?
Students: Make a list of things to do!
Tutor: What do you think is going to be on their list of things to do?
Students: Play with each other, eat their meals, and go to sleep.
Tutor: Ok well lets let (student # 1) read pages 4-6 aloud while everyone else follows along in their book to see what happens.
Stop One:
Tutor: Was our class right about Frog and Toad making a list of thing to do?
Students: Yes Toad made a list!
Tutor: What are some other things Toad put on his list besides playing, eating meals, and going to sleep?
Students: Get dressed, go on a walk with frog, and take a nap.
Tutor: What do you think is going to happen next in the story?
Students: Toad is going to follow his list all day and cross things off once he completes it.
Tutor: Okay, will (student # 2) read pages 7-11 aloud while everyone else follows along in their books.
Stop Two:
Tutor: Did Toad follow the things on his list and cross them off?
Students: Yes!
Tutor: Does Frog agree to follow the things on Toad’s list as well?
Students: Yes, Frog agrees to go on a walk with Toad because it is written on his list.
Tutor: What do you think is going to happen next?
Students: Frog adds things that he wants to do throughout the day to Toad’s list.
Tutor: Okay, will (Student # 3) read pages 12-15 aloud while everyone else follows along in their book.
Stop Three:
Tutor: Was our class right about Frog adding things to the list?
Students: No, while Toad and Frog were on a walk the list blew away!
Tutor: Well did Toad run after his list and catch it?
Students: No because when Frog asked him to run and catch it with him he said it wasn’t written on his list, so the list got away.
Tutor: Well since the list blew away what do you think will happen next?
Students: Toad will go home and make a new list with Frog.
Tutor: Okay, will (Student # 4) read pages 16 & 17 aloud while everyone else reads along in their book.
Stop Four:
Tutor: Were we right about Toad creating a new list with Frog?
Students: No, but Toad remembered from conversation with Frog that the last thing on the list was to “Go To Sleep” so he wrote it in the sand, crossed it out, and went to sleep.
Tutor: Do you think Toad could have thought of that on his own?
Students: Probably not because it is better to have a friend there to help you!
Tutor: So do you all think that it is necessary to have a list to get through the day?
Students: No, because things will happen that are not on your list and you still must accomplish them. It is great to be organized but we should deal with things as they come!
