Text Talk Lesson

For

“Goldilocks and the Three Bear’s”

Author & Illustrator: James Marshall

Puffin Books, 1988

Summary: The main characters in this book are Goldilocks and the three bear’s.  Goldilocks set off into the woods to get muffins from the village even though her mother told her not to go through the woods.  She entered the bear’s house and ate their porridge, broke a chair, and slept in their bed.  The bears came home and their house was destroyed! Goldilocks ran off and never saw the bear’s again.

Focus: The focus for understanding is to see that Goldilocks was not a good girl for going into a house that wasn’t hers.  It was wrong of her to destroy the house and she was lucky the bears didn’t catch her.

Vocabulary

Scalding

Tuckered

Scalding: In the story, when the bear’s were eating their porridge.  Papa Bear eat porridge and burned his mouth, he said the porridge was scalding.  Scalding means to burn or affect painfully with or as if with hot liquid or steam.

*I am going to name some things to see if you think they would be considered scalding.  If you think they would be considered scalding say “ Ouch! “.  If you think they should not be considered scalding then say “No Way! “

Boiling Water (Ouch)

Soup right off the stove (Ouch)

Hot Chocolate (Ouch)

Coca-Cola (No Way)

Milk (No Way)

What’s our word? Scalding

Tuckered: In the story Goldilocks is getting sleepy and the book tells us she is tuckered out.  She goes to look for a bed to take a nap in.  Tuckered means to weary; tire; exhaust.

*I am going to say some examples to see if you think you would be tuckered out from.  If you think you would be say “ Nap Time!”  If you think you would not feel this way say “ No way!”

After a long day of school (Nap Time!)

After a trip to California and back (Nap Time!)

After staying up all night at a sleepover (Nap Time!)

When you are going to a football game (No way!)

When you are going to watch your favorite movie (No Way!)

What’s our word? Tuckered

  1. Good lesson Brooke.

In a read-aloud, we should stop more often in the beginning to allow kids to get acquainted with the characters in the story and construct an accurate representation of the story plot.

When do you plan to show the pictures? I did not see any mention of showing pictures in your lesson plan except for the cover. We should show the pictures at every stop after questions we pose are answered.

Most of the questions you ask are prediction questions. We should also ask questions that check on children’s comprehension.

Please be careful with your language. In the sentence “Do you think that it was right that Goldilocks went into the Bears house?” You did not use the apostrophe. You should have said “the Bears’ house.”
